Oh so happy... : iHome iP92BZ Dual-Alarm Clock Radio for iPod (Black)
Pros:
1) Great sound from a relatively compact unit
2) Adjustable bass/treble
3) simple buttons (no weird knobs or silly plates to turn)
4) Attractive/sleek
5) Dimmer dims sufficiently for dark rooms and habitancy sensitive to light
Cons:
1) Nap highlight doesn't allow you to wake to radio (It does work with a docked iPhone or iPod but I don't own an iPhone and I leave my iPod in my car all the time... I didn't buy this alarm clock to dock an Apple device) and worse, it doesn't even allow you to adjust the type of buzzer Or the volume of the buzzer
2) As a effect of #1, I have to use "Alarm 2" to wake me up and adjusting this alarm oftentimes requires a lot of patience (see below)
The nap highlight is a joke. I am a heavy sleeper and if I took a nap when exhausted, there is a good opportunity the buzzer won't wake me up. It starts off barely discernable... And moderately increases the volume so that it's equivalent to maybe a 12 or 13 on the radio. And the buzzer type itself is more like a cricket sound than a buzzer (imagine the sound of a dozen or so crickets going at it but at a relatively low volume).
Also, there is no way to snooze while using the nap feature. The engineers should have made the nap highlight identical to the unit's alarm highlight but instead of requiring the user to specifically set the wake up time, it would be preset 15, 30, 45 etc min countdown increments. In reality, the nap highlight on this clock is more like an ultra-simplified and stripped version (to the point of it being entirely useless to me) of the fairly robust features of the two thorough alarms.
Some of you are probably wondering why I just don't use the second alarm when napping... Well I can. But this totally defeats the purpose of having a nap highlight (which is one of the main reasons I bought this unit)... And if you like to take random naps during random times of the day on random days of the week, you will find that this unit is very cumbersome to set.
There is no "hour" setting on the device... So when you set the alarm you have to hold down the "+" or "-" buttons to whether adjust the Minutes up or down. You have to press whether button once to growth or decrease the miniature in one increment and when you hold down the button for a integrate seconds, the minutes speed up considerably. But it takes me a ridiculous 35 seconds of keeping down a single button to go from 9 a.m. To 9 p.m. Or vice versa (I sometimes take short power naps during both those times of the day/night). So something as simple as setting an alarm to snooze for 15 or 20 mins could take me roughly an whole minute. That's a joke when I can set a loud alarm on my Blackberry in under 10 seconds.
I know I'm probably coming down hard on this expedient for what truly amounts to just a integrate flaws (and those that dock their Apple devices wouldn't agree with much of what I'm saying). But to me they are major flaws... And I don't think any expedient should lose any of its core functionality (radio alarm) because it lacks a third party product.
Edit: After using this for a few days I can say that I'm quite impressed by the sound capability for such a small relatively inexpensive unit. If you're looking at only using this as an alarm or exclusively in conjunction with an iPod/iPhone you're truly going to appreciate this unit.
